Andrew Decelis, PH.D.
Professor Andrew Decelis is a senior academic at the University of Malta’s Institute for Physical Education and Sport (IPES), where he has served as Director for over 15 years. He holds a B.Ed. (Hons) and M.Ed. in Physical Education from the University of Malta, and a Ph.D. in Sport, Exercise, and Health from the University of Bristol. With over a decade of experience in school-based physical education and more than 25 years in higher education and physical education teacher education, his academic contributions span teaching, research, and institutional leadership.

Andrew’s research primarily focuses on monitoring youth physical activity, sedentary behaviour, health, and fitness. His additional research interests include gender equality in sport and the dual careers of student-athletes. He has held several key administrative positions, including Head of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Consumer Studies, and Rector’s Delegate for Sport and Physical Activity.

Nationally, he has played a pivotal role in sport policy and governance, serving as both Chair and Director of the National Sports Council and as the founding President of the Maltese Association for Physical Education (MAPE). He also served as Vice-President of the Malta Handball Association. Internationally, he represents Malta on the Global Observatories for Physical Activity and Physical Education, and participates in EUPEA, FIEP, and the governing board and bureau of the Council of Europe’s Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS). He is also actively engaged in philanthropic work through the voluntary organisation Puttinu Cares.
