28 Oct Japan released their 2026 Report Card!
Congratulations to the Japan Report Card team on the release of their 2026 Report Card for the Global Matrix 5.0! The report card presents a national assessment of physical activity, health behaviours, and their determinants among Japanese children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years using nationally representative data.
Japan received an A grade for Active Transportation, with 91% of children aged 6 to 11 years and 85% of adolescents aged 12 to 17 years regularly commuting actively to school by walking or cycling. The School indicator also received an A, reflecting national physical education curricula, recess time across school levels, and guidelines for school infrastructure and equipment.
However, important challenges remain. Sedentary Behaviour received a D, with only 43% of children and 24% of adolescents spending less than two hours per day on screen time. Sleep also received a D, as only 29% of adolescents aged 13 to 14 years met the national healthy sleep guidelines.
Overall Physical Activity received a C, with 52% of adolescents aged 12 to 17 years accumulating at least 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity per day on at least four days a week. Data gaps also persist, particularly for Active Play and Community and Environment, highlighting the need for more comprehensive evidence to guide action.
The Report Card also assessed Weight Status, which received an A, with 90% of children and 87% of adolescents reported to be of normal weight.
